Growing up in Nederland, Texas, Alex was always known as the "kid with the arm". From the time he first started T-ball and Pop Warner football, his arm was always the focus of his athletic prowess. A two-time all-district quarterback and catcher at Nederland High School, Alex's goal was to play college baseball. While recruited at SFA as a catcher, he spent his true freshman year as both catcher and pitcher. Returning to SFA as a sophomore, his coaches determined that his pitching abilities were the key to helping the team and to Alex's future. With a 56 game schedule, Alex appeared in 32 games, second most in the Southland Conference and those 32 appearances tied him for the most ever in a season by an SFA pitcher. While most appearances were as the "set-up man", his record was 4-3 and he averaged over a strikeout per inning. Around Christmas time 2009, Alex felt something was just not right with his arm and team trainers put him on a regimen of rest and rehab for 3 months. He threw in 5 games early in the 2010 season but still knew there was something wrong with his arm...
